We’re excited to share that the long-anticipated restoration of Fydell House, one of Boston’s most significant historic buildings, will commence in June following full permission to start being granted by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This major milestone allows the £2.3 million project to move forward and welcome contractors and specialist crafts people on site and we are proud to be managing it.

In November 2025Evans & James Heritage Consultants were appointed Project Manager for the delivery phase of the capital works, which are set to begin in June 2025 and continue for approximately 10 months. We will be overseeing the implementation of this transformative conservation scheme, which will both preserve Fydell House’s architectural heritage and significantly improve its accessibility and public use.

Built in 1702 and rescued from demolition in the 1930s, Fydell House is a Grade I listed Queen Anne townhouse located within the Cultural Quarter of Boston. Historically home to the influential Fydell family, civic leaders and close associates of Sir Joseph Banks. Despite its heritage significance, the building has long required repair and modernisation to ensure it can continue to serve the community.

The restoration will include:

  • Repair of the external brickwork, roof, and internal finishes
  • Modernisation of electrical and heating systems
  • Conservation of internal plaster and timber panelled surfaces
  • Improved access to both house and gardens, including new ramps
  • A reconfigured rear outbuilding for toilet facilities and events
  • A new training and volunteer space to support community engagement

The building is owned and operated by Boston Preservation Trust and delivery of the project is supported by £1.6 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with contributions from Boston Town Fund and private organisations and donors. We are delighted to be working on this scheme with Conservation Architect Soul Architects Ltd and Pinnacle Conservation as the principal contractor.

As a consultancy specialising in historic building conservation, Evans & James is proud to play a key role in safeguarding the future of this important site. We’ll be providing project leadership, and support through every stage of delivery, along with compliance documentation and reporting to the NLHF and funders, ensuring the work meets the highest standards, in line with project budget.

The house will remain closed to visitors during construction but will have a programme of activities running alongside the works and beyond which will include hard hat tours, historic research and talks, and workshops catering to the needs of the local community. The building will re-open in Spring 2026. We look forward to sharing updates throughout the project, and to seeing Fydell House fully restored and ready to welcome the next generation of visitors.  For more information about Boston Preservation Trust and Fydell House, you can visit their website here.
