Heritage and Conservation

At Evans and James we understand that every historic building is unique and requires a tailored approach to the building whether being repaired, refurbished or its use changed.

With over 10 years experience in working within the historic environment, we understand how heritage assets should be conserved and repaired.  Equally, we understand how to sensitively adapt them in order to ensure that they can continue to be fit-for-purpose, meeting the needs of today in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.  We offer services relating to all matters of building conservation including:

Design and Project Management

Whether you are seeking to undertake internal alterations and refurbishment or interventions on a larger scale, Evans and James can provide all services relating to the design.  This could be contemporary or traditional but we can ensure that our designs respond to the character and significance of your property.

Depending upon the scale of your aspirations, or whether you are applying for any external funding, we can undertake options appraisals and feasibility studies for your project.  If you have larger plans for your site which may take several years to fund and complete, we can undertake site master planning in order to develop a cohesive and coherent strategy for achieving your ambitions for the site at a pace that suits your finances.

For clients and works that don’t require such a high level of reporting and investigation, our design service will start with a client meeting in order to understand your needs and gain as much understanding about the site as possible.  We will then develop various options proposals to meet the brief and present these to the client before developing the final proposal. These proposals can then be worked up into a listed building consent and planning application.

Should you wish to, you can take our services further and we can undertake the detailed design and specification of the works.  Working with other external consultants in a collaborative way we can develop a full tender package and manage the tender and procurement process for you, and project manage the works all the way through to project completion.

Listed Building Consent and Planning Applications

Whether your building is in the curtilage of another listed building, listed in its own right or located within a conservation area, Evans and James have the in-house expertise to develop full listed building consent and planning applications.  This service is normally provided in conjunction with the design service related to these interventions but can be provided as a stand-alone package if required.

Heritage Impact Assessments

A Heritage Statement or Heritage Impact Assessment is often required as an accompanying document to a planning application or Listed Building Consent application where a proposed development will impact the significance of a heritage asset.

Evans and James Associates can prepare the relevant report sufficient to meet the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework.  We provide arobust and considered approach to the preparation of these documents.

Repair and conservation

With years of experience of working in heritage and conservation, we can undertake full design and specification of repairs and conservation works.  These can then be compiled into a tender package with Evans and James managing the tender and procurement process in order to ensure that suitably qualified and skilled heritage contractors are appointed.  Through regular site visits and inspections we will ensure that repairs and conservation works are undertaken to the highest standards.

Condition Surveys

Understanding the challenge of working with complex historic buildings, we understand that each heritage asset is unique in its own right.

Our qualified surveyors, working individually or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, can undertake comprehensive condition surveys in order to document and explain the condition of the property and recommend remedial measures and actions that are required in order to maintain the building or bring it back up to the expected standard of repair.

We can develop an action plan for remedial works, categorising them under immediate, short, medium and long term actions with budget costings for undertaking the works so that you can budget plan for ensuring that the building continues to be repaired and maintained.

Our Services include:

  • Building condition surveys and defect analysis
  • Quinquennial inspections
  • Stock condition surveys and life-cycle cost plans
  • Façade mapping of defects
  • Specifications and schedules of work
  • Grant-related surveys and advice
